Introduction to Sign Language

We are delighted to host this beginners sign language course with Cumbria Deaf Association.

This is an 8-week non-accredited course.

Details as follows:
Course start date: 11 September
The course will run on Wednesday evenings 6.30-8.30pm for 8 weeks with a break at half term
End date: 6 November

Taught by a hearing tutor the course covers the basics of BSL together with a little deaf culture and awareness.

At the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Understand simple signs and relay them back,

  • Understand the importance of using facial expression and body language

  • Demonstrate a clear use of hand shapes

    No prior knowledge is necessary BSL is a visual language, which the tutor will demonstrate.

    Handouts will be given after each class.

    The tutor will monitor you throughout the course and give feedback

    Total cost for the course: £95 payable to Cumbria Deaf Association - details below.

    This includes all course content and refreshments and is subsidised by The Community Lottery who will part fund the room hire.

We are also able to offer TWO bursary places for this course funded through our Community Lottery grant. The bursary will contribute to part of the tuition fees. These will be allocated according to those most in need, who's finances may prohibit attendance otherwise, and can demonstrate good use of it..
